The construction cost more than $9,000 when it was built in the late 1800’s, about 3.5 times the cost of an entire home during that time. Not only is this one of the most well-preserved rooms in the house, it also inspired the ballroom design at Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride. Located in the East Foothills, Silver Creek is a great neighborhood if you’re looking to live close to nature. There are many jogging and biking trails as well as horseback riding.

Another version of the story says she believed her inheritance was cursed by the spirits of those killed by Winchester firearms and that she moved to escape them. The more prosaic theory suggests that after a double tragedy Sarah wanted a fresh start and a project to keep her mind occupied. The 1927 California Theatre, originally a grand movie palace, creates a lavish backdrop for performances by Symphony Silicon Valley and Opera San Jose, presenting classical works and chorale events.

And, in the ultimate Silicon Valley indulgence, why not custom-design your own luxury all-electric car at Santana Row’s Tesla store. A popular tourist attraction, the house, along with many other cultural institutions in the United States, has closed to help curb the spread of coronavirus. But as Michele Debczak reports for Mental Floss, you can now explore the Winchester House from afar via a detailed video tour posted on the mansion’s website. The Winchester Mystery House is a mansion in San Jose, California, that was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, the widow of firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester. The house became a tourist attraction nine months after Winchester's death in 1922.

Mysterious houses designed and constructed by eccentric owners are featured in almost every state. There is the Lizzie Borden House in Massachusetts, Craig-E-Clair Castle in New York, the Asa Packer Mansion in Pennsylvania, the House on the Rock in Wisconsin, Coral Castle in Florida, and the actual home of P.T. Many years ago, a publishing company put out a series of books that featured cut-out paper models of various haunted, mysterious houses.

First opened in 1990, the museum houses roughly 150 exhibits, ranging from classic displays to interactive real-world applications, and geared to kids as young as infants (the sweet spot, though, may be elementary-school age). Start by checking out Lupe, the replica of a woolly mammoth—whose real fossils were found in Silicon Valley—then take to the neighbouring dig pits to learn how archaeologists search for fossils. In other areas, kids can make art, blow giant bubbles with bubble rings, play with worms to learn about composting, and explore the mathematical magic of circles. Learn about San José’s rich agricultural and impressive ethnic roots at the expansive campus of History San José, on the southeast side of town. Though visitors can watch the video tour for free, the Winchester Mystery House is asking visitors to consider purchasing a voucher for use at a later date.

Moving to California

In true roadside attraction fashion, all visitors exit through an extensive gift shop featuring a variety of souvenirs. The first part of the home took us through the later construction in the back of the house. The rooms appeared to be an eclectic collection of fully and partially constructed spaces. The quality of the construction did not seem mansion-like to me in that the rooms did not display wealth or exceptional architectural features. The United States has many unique roadside attractions throughout the country that focus on the strange and unusual.

Guests can go through this self-guided exploration with an audio guide and a digital map. No one knows exactly what Sarah’s plans for the house were or why she pursued certain ideas or architectural features. Some think the winding hallways and labyrinthine layout were designed to confuse the ghosts and spirits she supposedly thought were haunting her, allowing her to live in peace in her new home. Prior to 1906, when the house was damaged by an earthquake, it had 7 stories. Odd features such as uneven floors and stairs, corridors to nowhere, doors that don’t open and windows that overlook other rooms in the house contribute to the eerie feeling inside. The previously offered video tour is also still available to rent for $5.99 or to purchase for $13.99 online at winchestermysteryhouse.com/video-tour/.

Alviso Marina Park is a great place to spend the day whether you’re birdwatching, walking along the boardwalk, or having lunch at one of the picnic areas. There are many older and historic buildings and homes in the neighborhood, including Henry Wade’s House. In Alviso, the single-family homes are mainly single-story mid-century modern or ranch-style homes. Enjoy unprecedented access to the world’s most bizarre mansion with an all-new tour —The Winchester Mystery House Immersive 360° Tour. This virtual experience allows guests to independently roam each level of the mansion, while exploring many rooms previously inaccessible on standard Estate tours. East San Jose is a large neighborhood encompassing many sub-neighborhoods located on the east side of Highway 101, in the shadow of the Diablo Range. There are many parks and golf and country clubs located in the area, as well as a wide variety of local restaurants and cafes. You can find a variety of housing options in East San Jose, whether you’re looking for a townhome, condo, apartment, single-family or multifamily home. Open to the public since 1923, the Winchester Mystery House offers daily guided tours of the estate where guests will have the opportunity to explore the mystery and unlock the secrets to the world-famous home.

She was a woman of independence, drive, and courage, and the mansion she built is world-renowned for its many design curiositiesand innovations,” said Walter Magnuson, Winchester Mystery House General Manager. “Today, we are striving to follow in her footsteps by offering an innovative way for guests to explore the mansion unlike ever before. The new tour also offers fans and the Winchester Mystery House staff the first-ever digital floor plan of the historic mansion. Sarah Winchester’s 38-year renovation project became the most infamous historic home in the country, but upon her death, no blueprints or floor plans were ever found. Now, after 97 years of guiding guests safely through its confusing halls without a map, the Estate’s caretakers are thrilled to present this digital floor plan to the public. Originally known as Llanada Villa, today it stands as an architectural wonder, a time capsule of a bygone era and one of America’s most celebrated haunted mansions.

Many of the single-family properties range from two-bedroom houses to large homes with lots of acerage, and they often have views of the nearby hills. You can also find apartments, townhouses, and condos in this San Jose neighborhood. On most days, two types of tours are offered, the Guided Mansion Tour and the Walk with Spirits Tour.

You’ll still find plenty of shops, and restaurants, and the area is near Highway 101. Silver Creek has it all – townhomes, condos, apartments, and single-family homes. Evergreen is one of the sub-neighborhoods included in the larger East San Jose neighborhood. This area is known for its residential streets, golf courses, and a vast selection of restaurants and cuisines. It’s connected to the rest of the Bay Area via the 101 and the BART rail system.

Little Portugal is divided into two areas – Little Portugal North and Little Portugal South. Both areas have a Portuguese heritage, with many restaurants and shops located in the neighborhood. You can also find many residential streets throughout this area, making it a great neighborhood to consider moving to. Some of the single-family homes located in Little Portugal have Portuguese architecture, while the condos and apartments are more modern in design. This neighborhood has stunning views of the Santa Cruz Mountains and is home to many wonderful outdoor activities. You can visit Almaden Quicksilver County Park, Calero County Park, and Almaden Lake Park if you’re looking to spend some time outside.

In Evergreen, single-family homes are the most common, but you can also find apartments, condos, or manufactured homes in the neighborhood. Avoiding so-called tourist traps, or at least spending less time at them, could also help curb the impacts of overtourism. In addition to daily tours, guests are encouraged to stroll around the property by taking the self-guided Sarah’s Garden Tour.

The new self-guided tour has been designed to prioritize the safety of guests and staff and is compliant with all current county and state guidelines. My daughter and I found visiting the Winchester Mystery House to be an entertaining way to spend an afternoon. Overall, the presentation about Sarah Winchester was informative and intriguing while the home offered a view into the history of the early 1900s in California.
